Education

Within the faculty the department has a significant role in the BSc and MSc curriculum.

Bachelor education

Besides fundamental knowledge and skills (Materials Science, Building Physics, Structural Mechanics and Design Informatics), the department Building Technology also educates students in the BSc curriculum in engineering disciplines relevant to construction (Structural Design and Climate Design). This is completed with the construction skills needed to design a building. The BSc curriculum of the faculty of Architecture pays attention to all these elements.

The department is responsible for about 25% of the total EC credits of all semesters in the BSc degree program. In the quarters with a focus on knowledge transfer students are educated principally in the fundamentals and the engineering disciplines while in the quarters with a focus on gaining design experience education focuses on design oriented aspects. The department is responsible for the content of the entire design project in the second BSc semester. Moreover, in the third and sixth semester design projects with a focus on technology are offered. Besides, in the fifth semester students have the option to do two minors with a strong emphasis on building technology: Imagination and Archineering.

Master education

In the MSc track Architecture, the focus of the department is on the technical support of design projects in individual design studios of the faculty. In the future, this support will be more and more in the form of individual consults to represent the architectural practice as closely as possible.

In parallel, the department offers its own self-contained Master track Building Technology and (within the Master track Architecture) the Master specialization Architectural Engineering with an emphasis on technically-oriented architecture. To be able to use a technical solution as the starting point for form, meaning and function, the curriculums of both BT and AE jointly start with themes related to the level of the details of buildings and constructions. In the second semester holistic concepts on a higher aggregation level will be discussed. After the first year the specialization Architectural Engineering particularly focuses on structure-oriented design themes while the track Building Technology emphasizes R&D (Research and Development) with a strong link to the themes investigated in the research portfolio (computational and structural design, climate design and façade design).

The department also offers two international education programs in close cooperation with international partners: the double-degree Master track Computational Architecture (in cooperation with METU in Ankara, Turkey) and the International Façade Master track (in cooperation with several European universities).
