Current Doctoral Research
| Title: The Spatialization of Civic Participation: Urban policy, socio-spatial restructuring and local action in West European low-income neighbourhoods
Key words: urban restructuring, deprived neighbourhoods, citizens participation
Abstract: The research is based on a comparative analysis of urban regeneration processes undertaken through civic participation in low-income neighbourhoods targeted by national and local urban restructuring policy due to a remarkable urban decline and deprivation from the 1980s until today in England, France and the Netherlands. The study gives emphasis to the last decade and the translation into space of those transformative processes under different context and local responses. The research aims in the first place to provide an overview of the economic and spatial restructuring effects on cities during this period and urban policy responding to such transformations. In the second place, to analyse area-based policy approaches, instruments and programs enforcing urban regeneration of deprived neighbourhoods through citizens involvement, their implementation at the neighbourhood level and spatial outcomes. In the third place, to expose urban regeneration contestations through alternative planning practices and grassroots achievements and influences in socio-spatial restructuring processes. Finally the research aims to compare and evaluate in different contexts how citizens participation is formulated in the frameworks of urban policy implementation, and the citizens capacity to influence planning practices and to achieve urban change.
