BK-SPS BLOG

In Fall 2011, Spatial Planning and Strategy launched a BLOG. You can get the most recent updates about our activities and learn about our ideas on research and education. The BLOG is an open platform for discussion. You can also give your contribution.

Title: Urban form and the multi-modal mobility network structure: evaluating local and regional sustainable accessibility of urban areas

Key words:

Sustainable urban development, urban form, mobility environments, accessibility, spatial network analysis

Abstract:

Sustainable urban development (SUD) tops the political and research agendas worldwide, but there is no agreement on what is a sustainable urban form and the conclusion is that its success will depend on the integration with the local context and the city-region. Current mobility patterns are highly unsustainable and a key influence on the sustainability potential of urban areas.

To address this problem I propose to evaluate and compare a series of neighbourhoods from the perspective of the mobility behaviour of their populations.

This comparison will be performed on a GIS platform at two scales:

•          the local scale, using current SUD evaluation criteria applied to the walking and cycling network;

•          the city-region scale, using an integrated multi-modal spatial network model based on the mobility infrastructure and land use data.

Possible interactions between the local and the city-region scales will be explored using statistical models.
