Chair of Climate Design and Sustainability
Hans Cauberg (born in 1944) has been a practice professor of Climate Design and Sustainability at the faculty since 2005. He concentrates on the question of how you can achieve a comfortable and functional indoor climate. For him, the architect’s design is an important starting point, as climate technology should not, in Cauberg’s view, be a point of restriction, but should in fact open the way for innovative designs. His research is aimed at the development of methods, systems and products that will support architects when creating sound indoor climates, such as climate-intelligent outer walls, high-quality insulation systems or climate-active building materials. The interaction between climate design and the architectural design process also forms one of the main thrusts of the Chair. What tools or methods can be used to ensure that aspects of indoor climate are included in every decision this is made during the design process? Cauberg also examines the assessment of comfort, where questions like, ‘What exactly are the definitions of comfort?’ and ‘How do you check that the levels of comfort you were aiming for have actually been realised?’ feature strongly.
As well as working for the Faculty of Architecture, he is also the Managing Director of Cauberg-Huygen, a firm of consultants on structural physics and acoustics. Here, he carries out applied research for organisations like Senter Novem, and gives advice on building projects such as the university library in Utrecht. He is a member of the Regieraad Bouw (National Construction Task Force) utility construction project group and chairman of the Ventilations of Buildings standards committee and the Technology policy committee of NEN-Bouw (standards organisation).
