Patrick Teuffel (born 1970 in Aachen/ Germany) is educated as a structural engineer and started his career at Arup in London, where he was involved with the structurual engineering of projects such as the Messehalle 3A in Frankfurt with Grimshaw Architects, Arnhem Central Station with UNStudio, IIT Student Campus in Chicago with OMA or the RAI in Amsterdam with Benthem Crouwel. From 1999-2003 he carried out his PhD about the application of adaptive systems in architecture and engineering at the University of Stuttgart at the Institue for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Sobek. He gained international professional and academic experience in several countries. Further on in 2003 he founded Teuffel Engineering Consultants, an engineering consultancy with focus on special and lightweight structures, the use of new materials and structures for solar plants. From 2006-2008 has worked as a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Engineering at the University of Leeds and since 2008 he is Professor for Architectural Engineering at TU Delft, where he established the “Adaptive Building Systems” research group, with focus on bio-inspired and performative design to realise smart and adaptive building systems.
