On Monday 11 June 2012 Ir. L.J.J.H.M. Gommans – architectural engineer – will defend his thesis ‘Area-based Energetic System Optimisation’.

Area-based Energetic System Optimisation

Over 40% of the energy demand is related to the built environment and is still largely reduced with interventions within or on buildings. ‘Area-based Energetic System Optimisation’ is a research into sustainable energy transition at a higher scale level, namely into the opportunities outside the buildings. The thesis contributes to the transition to a sustainable energy provision in a very practical way. The main modules of an energy system are described, as well as how they can be used in larger areas. A new technical design tool will be introduced as well: a calculation model for optimising an area, concerning its energy demand. The development of energy plans for Southeast Drenthe and South Limburg serve as interesting case studies.

Gommans conducted his research at the chair of Climate Design and Sustainability at the Architectural Engineering & Technology department (i.f.). J.J.M. Cauberg and A.A.J.F. van den Dobbelsteen supervised the research. The research is conducted in collaboration with Wageningen University, Groningen University and TNO and the thesis is a product of the SREX-research supported by the Energy Research Longterm Funding by Agentschap NL.
