Call for Submissions

 

The deadline for the submissions of abstracts for the colloquium on 26-28 May is extended until the 29th of February 2008. The feedback date of the submitted papers is not influenced by this decision. Note for academic submitters: all approved papers will be published in the abstracts book of the Corporations and Cities colloquium. This book will have an ISBN number.

As of 15 February the registration of the three-day colloquium on 26-28 of May 2008 in Brussels is open. It is possible to register and find detailed registration information here. Special fees have been developed for young professionals to encourage their participation to the colloquium and for all participants presenting a paper or case.

 

Venue

The three-day colloquium of Corporations and Cities will take place in the Flagey Building in Brussels.

This is the former National Institute for Radio Broadcasting (NIR). This building, designed by the Belgian architect Joseph Diongre, was finished in 1938 and is one of the first live broadcasting buildings in Europe. It is a magnificent example of late art-deco.

From the beginning, the history of the building was associated with radiophonic and musical productions and beginning in 1953 it also witnessed the arrival of television, the new medium that would subsequently enjoy an enormous expansion. Thus for more than thirty years, the NIR was the audiovisual centre par excellence. When the original owners left the building in 1974, various cultural institutions took up residence until 1995, giving it an added dimension.

In 1994 the building was partially listed. Four years later thirty different Belgian companies worked together to save the monumental building and restore it for a new purpose. The building now hosts several cultural activities, exhibitions and meetings.

 

 

Expert workshops

A series expert workshops will take place in different European capitals. Professionals and scientists are invited to table relevant cases and positions at a round table discussion. The output of these workshops will create the basis for the sessions at the Corporations and Cities colloquium.

Students redesign EU portfolio

 

In preparation for the colloquium 55 CRE students of the TU Delft will analyze and redesign the accommodation strategy of the European Institutions in Brussels. The portfolio of the European headquarters is much influenced by the tight urban fabric and the complexity of the Brussels urban policy making. In reference to the newest location strategy of the EC and the manifesto "A vision for Brussels" this in-depth case study will answer the question if the European headquarters should cluster or spread their premises in Brussels.

The outcome of this strategy redesign exercise will be presented and commented at the colloquium.

 

Organization

Corporations and Cities is organized by the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology and the Berlage Institute. It is an initiative of the department of Real Estate & Housing in collaboration with the department of Urbanism.
