Clean sweep for Architecture students in facade design competition

26 January 2012 by Marketing & Communicatie

‘How do you keep the heat of the sun out but still let the sunlight in?’ That was the problem the participants in the Bold and Beautiful Student Facade Competition were asked to solve.

The jury evaluated 14 innovative facade solutions submitted by students from various universities. The first, second and third prizes went to students from TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture.

Thermal Expansion

First prize went to the ‘Thermal Expansion’ of students Ka Shun Cheung and Katerina Doulkari. The jury commented: “We think this liquid sunblind is very innovative and exciting, especially the smart use of fluids. It is extremely flexible and highly implementable.”

‘Stretching Sunscreen’

The jury: “The idea for this flexible sunblind by Jos Noordzij and Arash Khoshnevis is so simple, one can’t help but wonder: why didn’t anyone think of this before? It is highly practical and could easily be taken into production. That is why this innovation deserves second prize.”

Particle Shading

Third place went to ‘Particle Shading’ submitted by Christopher Koster and Marius Otte. The jury’s comments: “This innovation changes the way you think about smoke. It even has a ‘flashy disco element’. It is spectacular, thanks to the LED lighting, as well as being highly flexible in application.”

Student Bucky Lab

All the students worked on Bucky Lab projects (Architectural Engineering & Technology department). The TU Delft students were praised for the high quality and innovative nature of their projects. They left students from such universities as Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Twente and the Universities of Amsterdam and Leuven (Louvain) behind them. The TU Delft students were supervised by lecturers Peter van Swieten and Marcell Billow.

The innovations will be on display until 27 January 2012 at the Facade Exhibition (GEVEL) at Ahoy, in Rotterdam. The TU Delft projects will also soon be exhibited in BK City.
