TU Delft Design as Politics meets Motel Mozaïque!

11 April 2012 by Marketing & Communicatie

TU Delft Design as Politics is creating one of the main exhibitions at the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR).

This exhibition will not only feature a lot to see, but the Hofbogen will also resonate to the soundtrack to the urban conflict as well. Especially for the 5th IABR, Design as Politics and Festival Motel Mozaïque – one of Rotterdam's best-known music festivals – will be entering into a very special alliance.

When architecture meets music

Can music and architecture really go hand-in-hand? ‘Definitely’, says TU Delft Professor in Design as Politics Wouter Vanstiphout. ‘Over the years, popular music has added a lot of colour to urban politics. From Marvin Gaye’s ‘Inner City Blues’ and The Clash’s ‘Guns of Brixton’ to the Grime music that accompanied the London riots of 2011.’ Musical pioneers create sound that reflects urban politics. The ‘Design as Politics’ exhibition also highlights this ‘soundtrack to the urban conflict’.

Where architecture meets music

What better place for music and architecture to come together than in Rotterdam? This city is full of young musicians, up-and-coming bands and thousands of music lovers, as well as innovative architecture, major area developments and also its fair share of urban issues. Design as Politics has therefore decided to partake in this musical and architectural friendship by joining forces with one of Rotterdam’s best-known music festivals: Motel Mozaïque.

How architecture meets music

Motel Mozaïque will even feature during the special invitation-only opening of the 5th IABR. A percussion act by Convoi Exceptional will take visitors on a musical journey from the Schieblock to the Hofbogen. On Sunday 22 April, Design as Politics, Rotown and Motel Mozaïque will be presenting the concert ‘De Avonduren’ and the exhibition ‘Design as Politics’ on the roof of the Hofbogen. Finally, Motel Mozaïque guided tours will be held for three days: guides will take visitors on a zigzag journey through the city, taking in visual arts, architecture, art and culture. Design as Politics will be providing some of the routes.
