Bouwkunde: Architecture and the Built Environment

The Architecture and the Built Environment Research Portfolio has been established first and foremost to contribute significantly to developments in architecture and the built environment in our own region – the western part of the Netherlands. The larger purpose is to play a key role in the international arena. The Portfolio is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the reputation for quality and innovation in Dutch architecture and spatial planning, and the prominence of the Randstad as a major European urban centre. Strengths in this portfolio can be found in:

  • healthy, energy efficient, comfortable buildings in social inclusive neighbourhoods
  • modelling and performance in architecture, building technology and urban development
  • design and strategies for the urban society
  • research by design and mapping in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design
  • managing complexities of the built environment
  • historical, cultural and theoretical underpinning.

The research portfolio of the Faculty of Architectur includes seven research groups. PhD research takes place in all of them.
