Requirements

A+BE expects that you meet the following requirements before you start a PhD in Delft.

Degree

All PhD students must hold a degree equivalent to Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Architecture, Urbanism, Building Technology, Real Estate, Built Environment, Geomatics or another field that supports the research objectives of the Graduate School of Architecture and the Built Environment.

If you are not sure whether your degree equals the Dutch Master of Science title you can ask Nuffic to help you. Nuffic is the national contact point for the evaluation of foreign diplomas in higher and general secondary level education in the Netherlands.

You can also consult the TU Delft Admissions Office. Just send the Admissions Office copies of your degree certificates and you will receive free advice from an experienced admissions officer within three weeks.

Finances

To ensure a decent standard of living, especially in view of the rising cost of housing, you will need about €1250 per month or €15,000 per year. We will ask you for proof that you can cover these living expenses. We will not accept you as a PhD student if we think that you will struggle financially.

The Graduate School of Architecture and the Built Environment does not require you to pay tuition fees, but it does ask a bench fee of €5,000 per year. The OTB institute may waive its right to that bench fee.

Altogether you will spend € 20,000 per year during your PhD study.

We do not offer PhD scholarships. This means you need to organise the resources necessary to stay in the Netherlands yourself. Please look at Grantfinder to search for scholarships that could apply to you.

Language

PhD students will be expected to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. PhD candidates whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL or IELTS, (proof of English language proficiency certificates older than two years are not accepted). Nationals from the USA, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempted from the English test requirement.

TOEFL: Applicants taking the internet-based TOEFL are required to have a minimum total score of 100. TU Delft TOEFL Institution Code: 0031.

IELTS: If you take the IELTS test (academic version) your overall band score must be at least 7.0.
